roma, part two: vatican city

I didn't know this until I was already there but vatican city is actually completely it's own city-state/territory/nation, neat huh? we ventured over to vatican city our second day in rome and spent the morning and into the afternoon walking all throughout the museum, there were rooms with every surface painted with precision by various great artists. the pope resigned a week before and the day before we were there the cardinals began to meet in the sistine chapel, so we were not able to see it. kind of a big bummer but I suppose it will be a excuse to one day return once more. st. peters piazza was so much bigger than I had imagined and we were able to walk right into the church. goodness was it magnificent. the details were incredible and the sculptures and just whoa. could you imagine going there for mass on sundays, that being your home church?! it was rather breath taking. I made sure to take a photo of the swiss guards and their very colorful attire then walking about a bit more exploring the city before calling it a day.
